The Anu People

The most significant fact of the founding of Pharaonic Civilization by the Anu people is rarely,
if ever, mentioned in texts on Ancient Egypt. Not to mention the Anu is actually worse than,
say, writing a history of the United States of America and not mentioning the Pilgrims (aka
"Founders"/"Forefathers"). One has to look at earlier texts for this vital information:
quote:

Amélineau, is credited with the discovery of the Anu and their contribution to Egyptian
civilization. It was Amélineau who designated the first black race to occupy Egypt as the Anu.
He showed how they came slowly down the Nile and founded the cities of Esneh, Erment,
Qouch and Heliopolis. The actual name is always written with three columns. He states that
"All those cities have the characteristic symbol which serves to denote the name Anu." The
original name for Heliopolis is "Annu". "Egypt's greatest Masters, Osiris, Hermes, Isis, and
Horus all belonged to "the old race", the black Anu." (Chandler, 1999)

From Amélineau:
quote:

These Anu were agricultural people, raising cattle on a large scale along the Nile, shutting
themselves up in walled cities for defensive purposes. To this people we can attribute,
without fear of error, the most ancient Egyptian books, The Book of the Dead and the Texts of
the Pyramids, consequently, all the myths or religious teachings. I would add almost all the
philosophical systems then known and still called Egyptian. They evidently knew the crafts
necessary for any civilization and were familiar with the tools those trades required. They
knew how to use metals, at least elementary metals. They made the earliest attempts at
writing, for the whole Egyptian tradition attributes this art to Thoth, the great Hermes an Anu
like Osiris, who is called Onian in Chapter XV of The Book of the Dead and in the Texts of the
Pyramids. Certainly the people already knew the principal arts; it left proof of this in the
architecture of the tombs at Abydos, especially the tomb of Osiris and in those sepulchers
objects have been found bearing unmistakable stamp of their origin, such as carved ivory, or
a little head of a Nubian girl found in a tomb near that of Osiris, or the small wooden or ivory
receptacles in the form of a feline head--all documents published in the first volumn of my
Fouilles d'Abydos.

From the Kememu themselves

Anu.......................... the city of Heliopolis (Coptic; On)

Djandjané Anu............ the Anu Court of Judges: Tem; Shu; Tefnut; Osiris; Thoth
Anu n Ptoh................ the Anu of Ptah (Denderah)
Anu n Nut.................. the Anu of Nut (Denderah)

Denderah

Judging by the sheer number of given titles, the most venerated city of Kemet was not
Thebes, but Denderah. After all, this was the city where the Parents of the Kememu nation
(Isis and Osiris) were born. (It is also in the same neighborhood as Naqada). Here are some of
the titles of this city:

"The birthplace of Isis"
"The Throne of the Queen"
"The perfect throne in the Holy of Holies"
"The place of joy"
"The thrones of Horus"
"The holy temple of Horus"
"The throne of eternity"
"The throne of the drink"
"The birthplace of Nut"
"The Golden House"
"The Sanctuary of Osiris"
"The Sanctuary of Re"
"The city of the knowing of Isis"
"The temple of life"
"The temple of Hathor"
"The eternal house"
"The exalted temple"
"The holy temple of Horus of the Two-Lands"
"The house of knowledge" (per Rekhit)

Wally - I don't give much credence to the concept of "ONE" unique group of people founding the nation of Egypt. Yes, perhaps one group did follow the Nile north, so what?

Undoubtedly many more others simple migrated into the Sahara region as hunter-gathers. and as it started to dry-up, then migrated toward the only permanent water source - the Nile.

As to the texts that you cite: the Book of the Dead and the Texts of the Pyramids. None of them are sufficiently old to tell the story of the founding of Egypt, as writing came after the nation was founded.

To my mind, the only thing that can be said for sure about Egypt: the earliest and the dynastic period, is that it was "Multi-ethinc" (that is NOT not the same as multi-racial).

My position is supported by the various Palettes and Stele (such as the Narmer palette) which depict people of various dress and hair type.

But even more importantly, artifacts like the Gebel Knife demonstrate that the ancients did not live in a homogeneous national vacuum - they were ALWAYS INTERNATIONAL!

The King on the right above is a Sumerian King!

This is because you have not studied ancient history. To study ancient history you must learn more than one language.

Having at least a reading knowledge of different languages allows you to find primary sources illuminating aspects of ancient history.

right thank you for correcting me on that, dumb error on my part. He was talking Mesopotamia. But the point is people are defining the origins of the Anu in different ways. Wally's saying they were the first to occupy Egypt while Clyde says they founded
South West Asian civilizations, Sumer etc.
Unless the so called Anu founded both civilizations.
My opinion is that Amélineau and a few other Egyptologits of the period misapplied the term.
Anu refers to Sumeria not Egypt.

Anu refers to Sumeria not Egypt.

The Anu introduced civilization to Mesopotamia. The Anu probably represent the Ubaid people.

The Anu ruled the world before the great flood. The Anu were the pygmy people. The great flood left many Anu (pygymy) populations isolated around the world.

In Mesopotamia the Anu were unable to defend their civilization from attacks by the Hill people (Gutians). The Anu probably invented the cuneiform scrpt. This writing system was used for commercial purposes in Mesopotamia. The Anu introduced mining into the region.

The Kushites after Flood took over the Anu mining interests. The Kushites founded Sumer. Due to their Kushite origin they refered to themselves as the Kings of Kish/Kush. The Kushites came from Nubia.

The Kushites or Sumerians originally used the Proto-Sharan script. Due to the common use of cuneiform by commercial interest in Meopotamia the Sumerians abandoned Proto-Sumerian writing.

I accept the fact there were ancient Blacks in Asia. These Blacks were the Australian type people who mainly live in Australia and the Hill regions of Oceania.

The coastal Melanesians on the otherhand, are descendants of recent Africans who settled the area after being forced from Asia. The Polynesians/Filipinos and etc., who are known as the original Mongoloid people and called Classical Mongoloid in the literature probably originated in Anatolia or Mesopotamia.

The Australians are the original settlers of Asia (around 60kybp), and may represent members of the first out of Africa migrants. I never refer to these people as Africans, although I do recognize them as Blacks.

The Bushman/ Khoisan probably represent the second African migration of homo sapien sapiens out of Africa. I would class these people with the CroMagnon/Grimaldi group who entered Iberia after 34kybp. Remnants of this great people were found on every continent when Europeans first explored the world.

The Anu or Black pygmies type may represent the Natufians who began to migrate out of Africa after 20,000 and settled in the Levant which was first settled by Cro Magnon people who early replaced the Neanderthal folk. The Natufians would represent the fourth African migration into Eurasia.

Overtime the Anu established a worldwide metals trade network. The Anu traded in metals and used Mesopotamia and Egypt as major centers of their civilization.

In Mesopotamia the Anu invented the cuneiform writing to keep business records. Here they also began to employ Gutians to work in their mines. These Gutians were the ancestors of the Syrians/Iraqis and Persians. After the 4000 BC when a great flood occured the Anu centers of power declined.

By the time the Anu entered Eurasia the Classical mongoloid people who are the ancestors of the Indonesians/Vietnamese/Filipinos and etc. were probably already settled in Anatolia. The classical mongoloids probably constructed Catal Huyuk. The close relationship between Sumerian and the AustroAsiatic languages suggest that the classical Mongoloid people may have also inhabited Mesopotamia by the time the Sumerians entered the area.

It appears to have been a natural catastrophe which caused the classical mongoloids to migrate eastward. We know this because many of the former sites of the Classical mongoloids in Anatolia were occupied by the Kushites (Kaska) people after 2500 BC.

By 1200 BC the clasical mongoloids had become well established in India. Around this time they conquered the Dravidian people who founded the first Shang empire, and set up a new Shang Empire at Anyang.

By 1000 BC the Hau/Han tribes came down from the mountains and pushed the classical mongoloids southward into Yunnan and eventually Southeast Asia. The Han began to make the Yueh and li min people their slaves. The Han often used the Qiang (another Black tribe) as sacrifice victims.
The Han killed off as many Black tribes as they could. The only thing that saved the pygmies in East Asia, was the fact that they moved into the mountains in areas they could easily defend from Han attacks.

This movement of Han and classical mongoloid people southward forced the Kushite/African (Qiang, li min and other African) tribes onto the Pacific Islands. It is these Africans who represent the coastal Melanesians.

The fifth migration out of Africa were the Kushites. The Sumerians, Elamites, Xia (of China), Harappans of the Indus Valley and coastal Melanoids are the Proto-Saharan people known in History as the Kushites. These people originated in the Highland regions of Middle Africa, and began to occupy the former trade centers of the Anu in Eurasia and the Americas. It is for this reason that we find West African placenames in the Pacific and India.

After 4000 BC the Kushites replaced the Anu in the metal trade. They opened new They came in contact with the Gutians who adopted many aspects of their culture. It would appear that the Kushites were very liberal because the Gutians were only used as mine workers by the Anu. Over time the Gutians took Lagash and adopted completely Sumerian (Kushite) culture.

Given the origin of the classical mongoloids in Anatolia, and the Han Chinese somewhere in North China or Central Asia, the Southeast Asians are not descendants of the first African migration to Eurasia. This is why the Chinese and Classical mongoloid people share few if any genes with the Australians. The Classical mongoloids share genes mainly with the coastal Melanesians who are of African origin, but few genes with the Chinese of East Asia.

Southern Egypt and Nubia, and the name is also applied in Sinai and Libya.

As to the Southern Egyptians, we have the most essential document, a portrait of a chief,

Abydos. Preceding his name, his address is given on this earliest of visiting cards, "Palace of
the Aunu in Hermen city, Tera-neter." Hemen was the name of the god of Tuphium (Lanz.,
Dict, 544), 13 miles south of Luqsor. Erment, opposite to it, was the place of Aunu of the
south, Aunu Menti. The next place in the south is Aunti (Gebeleyn), and beyond that Aunyt-
seni (Esneh).

The chief peculiarity of the figure is the droop of the chin; this is caused by a slanting jaw
with short ramus. The same type of jaw is seen in the ivory king from Abydos, and moreover,
the Scorpion king who preceded Nar-mer.

These figures are, then, the precious portraits remaining of the native pre-Menite kings of
the south, and they are of a type certainly different from the dynastic type of the square-
jawed Nar-mer (Mena) and his follows.

The difference of the slope of jaw in the Aunu people was illustrated by our researchers in
the cemetery at Tarkhan. In dealing with the remains, the jaws were all photographed in
position, and they show two groups of the slope of the lower edge as 20 and 28 to the
horizontal.

Now we can go a step further. On the big mace-head of the Scorpion king there are carved
the standard figured. These emblems of Min and Set, with rekhyt plovers handing from them.
The rekhytu people, however, were the special care of the dynastic race, protected by Aha
and by Thetu. They were an organized rank ruled by a mayor in the Vth and VIth dynasties.
The Scorpion king was, then, an enemy of the dynastic falcon, Horus.

As we find the Aunu strong in the south, but the rekhytu strong in the north, it seems that the
rekhytu came in with the dynastic invasion, entering the Nile valley at Koptos. Those who
went south were attacked by the Aunu, and those going north founded a base at Heliopolis
(Syro-Egypt, 2).

Page 5
"Some of the most obvious public works of the Ist dynasty were the carrying on of earlier
undertakings. The great historical maces, and the irrigation works, had been developed
under the Scorpion king of the Aunu, and both may have originated much earlier. Many vases
and bowls (HR, xii, xvii, xix, xxxiv) bear his name."

Page 78
"Nar-mer Pallette. The principal monument of the first king Nar-mer (Mena) is the large slate
palette (XL). This shows his capture of the "chief of the lake" (uo she), and the falcon holding
6,000 prisoners. Behind him is his body-servant," the rosette here, and elsewhere, being
used for the king. The resemblance of the king on this palette to the sculptor's trial piece, or
model shows that almost certainly to be the royal portrait. It was never part of a statute,
being flat on the back and top; it seems to be a life-study as a model for future figures. It is
accepted as the oldest portrait figure, by Michaelis, who notes the "astonishing acuteness of
the racial type."

Page 102
"Dynasty II, Tombs. The IInd dynasty came to terms with the earlier Aunu people, and the
first king took the name Hetep-sekhemui, "peace of the two powers." By the middle of the
dynasty, the Aunu people began to control the rule, and Set appears on the royal name
instead of Horus. By the end of the dynasty, the two scepters were "united in peace" by Kho-
sekhemui".

Page 105
"Motives of Dynasty III. A breath of life came from the Sudan. The new dynasty was headed
by Sa-nekht of Sudany type, and he gave a fresh impetus which was later continued by Zeser,
Yet there was no new invention, but only a strengthening of the old style, without a different
art.

The southern source was likewise the inspiration of the XIIth, the XVIIIth, the XXVth
dynasties, and in a similar manner. The Sudany infusion continued in the upper classes, as
seen in the head of Seker-kha-bau.

The development of stone building at the Step Pyramid of Zeser at Saqqara was based on
earlier craft, the carvings of Dynasty I in wood and ivory. Small objects such as head-rests, had
columns with convex fluting, and also with concave, in the IInd dynasty. The motives may
have originated in the larger work and, later, been borrowed for it again. A similar translation
from wood to stone is also to be found in the stone copies of wooden doorways, and of
wooden doors represented as thrown open, at the entry of chambers in the temple of the
Step Pyramid. In the IIIrd dynasty there was the achievement of using stone for wood, fixing
the principles of art."--W.M. Flinders Petrie

The ultimate reality of written history...

An, Anu, On, Onu
 -

 -

note that Osiris is identified as an Anu (singular = Ani; 3rd glyph Ani Ntr = Great Anu Ancestor) ;
the Moon-god "Anu Emen.t khasu" and "Anu dwa" - the Anu god of the heavens/afterlife
 -
and all of these philosophical precepts can be traced back to the Sudan; Kush/Ekush/Etosh/Ethaosh...

From the Sudan to Kemet, to Sinai, to Libya, to Sumer and beyond...

It's a mistake to say Ancient Egypt was founded by one group when we know for a fact that the Western Sahara certainly played a big role. The people who built Nabta Playa surely took their smarts into the Nile Valley when the Sahara dried up.

If you study Narmer's tablet, it is clear that the political unification of Ancient Egypt was not
brought about through different African ethnic groups coming together peacefully - there
was no Kumbaya moment; No, Ancient Egypt was united through armed struggle - military
force - a protracted military struggle predating Narmer but culminating with his victory over
the heterogeneous African nations dwelling within the Nile Valley and Delta regions...

After this victory, there were no long millenniums of political and ethnic harmony; Egyptian
history is replete with struggles, even though it had achieved the ideological goal of creating
a national Egyptian identity...

There are lessons in the formation of these African Civilizations; Kemet, Kush, Khami:
Zimbabwe, Ghana, Mali, Songhay which are instructive in the context of modern day Africa...

a) all of these civilizations were multi-ethnic and came into existence (political unification)
through armed struggle...

b) are you not at all familiar with Shaka and the formation of the Zulu nation? Again, through
armed struggle...

c) The United States of America began as a British colonial possession, at that time a
conglomeration of both native as well as European and African ethnic groups; yet the
formation of the United States was due to a handful of wealthy, propertied White men...
and all of this taking place during the armed struggle against the British...

I never said there wasn't struggle. Being Humans (though extremely ancient) I'm sure they fought over the same things we fight over today. Humans are competitive by nature. I simply said the originators weren't some homogenous group and Nabta Playa shows that.

Lemme try to 'splain mahn, by 'splainin English tuh ya [Smile]

Originator does NOT mean the same thing as

Contributor which does NOT mean the same thing as

Organizer, Unifier, Consolidator...

a) The Ancient Egyptians originated from the Sudan, the fertile Saharan crescent,
the Eastern desert between the Nile and the "Red" sea, Central Africa...

b) Ancient Egypt originally consisted of this polyglot of multi-African ethnicities, each
occupying its own fiefdom, which would later become States; all of whom would contribute
to the society that would ultimately emerge...

c) The emergence of this first recorded nation in history was the result of its political
unification and consolidation
by the Anu ethnic group...

Now information.

Question is, where does this fit:

The Khormusan: Evidence for an MSA East African industry in Nubia

quote:

There is clear evidence of lithic technological variability in Middle Paleolithic (MP) assemblages along the Nile valley and in adjacent desert areas. One of the identified variants is the Khormusan, the type-site of which, Site 1017, is located north of the Nile's Second Cataract. The industry has two distinctive characteristics that set it apart from other MP industries within its vicinity. One is the use of a wide variety of raw materials; the second is an apparent correlation between raw material and technology used, suggesting a cultural aspect to raw material management. Stratigraphically, site 1017 is situated within the Dibeira-Jer formation which represents an aggradation stage of the Nile and contains sediments originating from the Ethiopian Highlands. While it has previously been suggested that the site dates to sometime before 42.5 ka, the Dibeira-Jer formation can plausibly be correlated with Nile alluvial sediments in northern Sudan recently dated to 83 ± 24 ka (MIS 5a). This stage coincides with the 81 ka age of sapropel S3, indicating higher Nile flow and stronger monsoon rainfall at these times.

Other sites which reflect similar raw material variability and technological traditions are the BNS and KHS sites in the Omo Kibish Formation (Ethiopia) dated to ∼100 ka and ∼190 ka respectively. Based on a lithic comparative study conducted, it is suggested that site 1017 can be seen as representing behavioral patterns which are indicative of East African Middle Stone Age (MSA) technology, adding support to the hypothesis that the Nile Valley was an important dispersal route used by modern humans prior to the long cooling and dry trend beginning with the onset of MIS 4. Techo-typological comparison of the assemblages from the Khormusan sites with other Middle Paleolithic sites from Nubia and East Africa is used to assess the possibility of tracing the dispersal of technological traits across the landscape and through time.

The Anu People:

"Egypt's greatest Masters, Osiris, Hermes, Isis, and
Horus all belonged to "the old race", the black Anu." (Chandler, 1999)

.

 -

Seti I father of Ramesses II
 -

In other words Emile Amélineau, who invented the concept of the Anu says that they were black Africans and were the Pre- Dynastic Egyptians
He says that the Dynastic Egyptians, like Seti (above) were tanned white people who conquered the Anu and used the Anu knowledge to continue the Egyptian civilization and establish the dynasties

Amélineau had seen and discovered a lot of Egyptian art. he considered the Egyptians to be a tanned Asiatic white people

But then he found this >>
 -

And his interpretation was that this represented a different black race of an earlier period who were conquered by who would become the Dynastic Egyptians a white people, as stated above in Cheikh Anta Diop's book

In other words he came up with the Anu theory after already perceiving the Egyptian art as representing people of a different foreign type who conquered Egypt

I feel I have to mention Cheikh Anta Diop in this thread because Amélineau's theory that there was a population Egypt called the Anu had been forgotten for many years until Diop brought him up again in his book in 1974 (although I think wrote about it in the mid 50s or 60s in his French books)

Lioness, who is this supposed "white race", where did they reside for so long?

Please elaborate...I see forward to your reply.

Ps, it was not Diop who made that stament, he only cited that statement by Amélineau. This was then translated into English.

quote:
“Since the Egyptian origin of civilization and the extensive borrowing of the Greeks from the Egyptians are historically evident, we may well wonder with Amelineau why, despite those facts, most people stress the role played by Greece while overlooking that of Egypt. The reason for this attitude can be detected merely by recalling the root of the question. As Egypt is a Negro country, with a civilization created by Blacks, any thesis tending to prove the contrary would have no future. The protagonists of such theories are not unaware of this. So it is wiser and safer to strip Egypt, simply and most discreetly, of all its creations in favor of a really White nation (Greece). This false attribution to Greece of the values of a so-called White Egypt reveals a profound contradiction that is not the least important proof of Egypt’s Negro origin.”
-- Cheikh Anta Diop, The African Origin of Civilization: Myth or Reality, pg. 234. 1974
