if you're lucky enough to live in the 'western world' you shouldn't get a job. learn a marketable craft, set up business and pitch... the universe takes care of the rest.
there is no substitute for education though.

Africa is calling to me and it is getting louder and louder. My heart is looking after Africa, her natural birth place. I want a peace for my heart.

Ah, the ironies of history. Blacks singing and giving credit to the music that whites copied from Blacks without giving them credit. And then there is Egypt, whites appropriating anything they want and then saying they invented it. Maybe in 40 years rap will be "white music."

Interesting that you mention this; I have seen subtle but strong/heavy-handed attempts at this. From the "push back" of concious rappers from the mainstream, to the "minstrelisation" of commercial hip-hop, to trying to postulate Eminem as the "best" of the rappers, to persecution of rappers by police, and even murder... etc.
It hasn't worked though, and this must be fairly embarrasing for them. Talents such as Lupe Fiasco keep "showing up" and old heads like Jay-Z and Kanye West, though not perfect in their ways, are still providing some quality of griotry. However, it is clear to see that EXTREMELY GOOD talent is being pushed away from the limelight in the commercial hip-hop scene which is still very much controlled by white america (despite the fact that the likes of Diddy, Jay-Z and Russell Simmons collectively are worth billions of $$$. You would think they would try to break way, but who knows what struggles they are facing...).

I'm sorry but the rap I hear these niggas spouting on the train during my commutes is brainless as far as substance to the words. Granted, some little bit of it is really schmoove in delivery rhythm timing and slick in rhyming. Reggae remains the only musical form that once consistently pushed Afrikan consciousness and was danceable to the max and commercial.
African American Classic of the late 60's early 70's was conscious and spiritual but limited to jazzheads. The Last Poets were never danceable. Gil Scott Heron tried to popularize but just lost it after splitting from the Midnight Band. Other pre-rap conscious spoken word artists were more or less rejected by the mass of listeners they wanted to reach and uplift.
Trying to get the message to the masses via music is a challenge on many levels. Making the music palatable and commercial as a vehicle for the lyrics is the biggest hurdle. And yes, government agencies will do all they can to assure something happens to anyone successful in accomplishing that end.
Look at Bob. A simple toe injury sustained playing soccer led to cancer from head to foot???????????? ???????????????????????????????????????????? From Slave Driver to Ambush in the Night and Africa Unite all peoples loved the man the music his message.
But the posthumous so-called Legacy cd was nothing but a "weakheart" collection of safe mostly non-conscious material. It outsells Survival, THE consciousness handbook. Check out its lyrics herePosts: 8014 | From: the Tekrur in the Western Sahel | Registered: Feb 2006
