An anthropology professor of mine actually explained this. That this custom is usually practiced by women in matrilineal societies of Africa where married women who are barren and unable to produce heirs can take on a psuedo-wife which produces heirs for her. This psuedo-wife is usually a woman of low rank and her children take on the name and inheritance of the real wife. No actual lesbianism involved!!
