As a foreigner doing business in Egypt, I would like to know how do you feel about the way Egyptians expect so much more from you in terms of salaries than they would from their Egyptian employers.

Granted, we pay more for everything else, like taxis, hotel rates, and any other place that has a local rate vs foreign rate? So now is employees.

On the flip side of this Egyptian employers are expected to pay their foreign employees more in terms of salary,at least if they recruit them from abroad, of course this is to be expected, though Im sure they are still working for less than they were in their country, but still being charged the same as if they were on tour.

Example: A friend owns an upscale franchised cafe, and just discovered that she pays almost double the salary that Egyptian owned cafes in the same bracket pay to their waiters.

How do Egyptians get aways with paying such low salaries? Are they the biggest expoiters of their own people?

because his upscale cafe will charge egyptians 20 times for a cofee or tea that a low scale egyptian cafe charge. DO YOU UNDERSTAND

DO YOU UNDERSTAND what's meant by the SAME BRACKET.... It means she is comparing the salary she pays to an egyptian owner of an UPSCALE CAFE, not a low scale one.

And please don't assume that all foreign franchises are owned by foreigners, most of them are owned by wealthy Egyptians.

Take out 'employers', insert ERS. That will sum it up nicely. [Wink]

Yes they are unfortunately.

Too many people working their butts off for actually nothing and some more million can't even find any employment.

If the supply is much greater than demand, the employers will always get away with it. The employees should consider themselves lucky to be employed.

Do not let these reported statistics throw you off, there is a large informal sector of employees, that are not on the books. I would think half of them are not on tax rolls and counted in unemployment stats, when in fact they receive some kind of income even if they are somebody's maid or bowab, im sure its still low income, but not reported income.

We once offered a maid 650le for cleaning 5 days a week, she brushed us off saying she could make 3000le/month cleaning 2 flats a day a 50le each working for herself.
