This is a laid back thread for those interested in going to the continent. Been to Ethiopia which was my first African country, Tanzania, South African 3x and Kenya. I plan on returning to Tanzania this coming February, and I am planning Uganda and Rwanda 2024 summer. So 4 different African countries and 6 times.

I always say Africa is "raw" whether it be positive or negative, you are gonna get a raw experience. A lot of us here discuss African history and genomes but I wonder if there is anyone here curious about visiting the continent?

But anyways I am slowly turning into an African veteran(for context I am Black American not continental African) and so please feel free to ask me ANYTHING. Including stupid questions just NO TROLLING...

How many of those vacations did you undertake with friends/family members as opposed to going alone? The last time I went on vacation, I went by myself. I liked it that way because a lot of people can be flaky when it comes to long term goals (found out someone I was planning a road trip with, didn't have the planned amount he was supposed to have at the agreed time).

Or maybe you have better luck with disciplined people around you who can save money with you on multiple vacations.

I saw a Documentary a few years ago on the historical Churches in Ethiopia(possible Lallibella or maybe Mary Zion in Axum) and I remember there was a black Christ on the Cross in the church, which made an impression because having grown up attending Catholic School(and Catholic Mass), Jesus was always white....like I don't really care much about Jesus' skin color nor do I think he was "black"...but IDK, I just want to see if you've seen this in person, like am I having a false memory or what...Ive never seen this Ethiopian Jesus in in pictures..
Edit: BTW I never had a problem with the white Crucified Jesus I saw growing up, I just never seen a black Crucified Christ as my Church is protestant and never depicted Christ, like straight up I never even thought that a Church outside of some racially aware ADOS groups maybe would depict Christ as black, hell Ive barely seen it in any of the "Black" Churches I grew up in outside of those weird fans...you know the ones with the popsicle handle and a image from the bible..

BTW, OT can you guys add sections? I'd love to see a critical religion section, (I know sadly it would probably devolve into stupid BHI/This/that figure was black etc but it could be moderated...idk) Id just love to have more critical religious discussions....but then again there's Desret so Im not picky..tbh. I just need to stop being lazy and actually start some discussions/threads

Please stay on topic. This thread is ONLY about people curious about visiting the continent and who may have questions about traveling there and on the ground experience. Any religious/section questions can be DMed to either me or Punos_Rey.

Africa? Or my travels in total? Ethiopia was the only vacation I went with a family because my sister lived in Addis Ababa(teaching English), and she married a local. Tanzania and Kenya were with a friend. So 1 with family and 2 with friends. Out of 6.  Again this is only in regards to my Africa travels.

Yea, I usually prefer traveling by myself as it makes planning easier. If I do travel with a friend I give him the details and its up to THEM to follow thru if not I just go by myself either way.

I have only 2 what I call "travel buddies" I travel with. Because they are serious, have good jobs and love traveling. Outside of them I travel by myself.

I didn't get to go to Lallibella. But I did get to go to Haile Selassie's church where I did see "Black" angels.

Yeah, I won't be setting my vacation up for failure like that again. If I'd ever plan with someone else I'd low key make sure I have a plan b. When that happened I canceled the trip and went shopping with my savings. Should have had a plan b or just continued saving.

The downside to traveling alone is you have to be your own security. Can't count on someone else to be an extra pair of eyes for any situation. But the upside is you can have a more introspective journey (if that's what you're into) and you take in more and observe more when you're not inside your own bubble with your people. Also, locals with good intentions will find it easier to walk up to you when you're alone.

Last time out I had people walk up to me while I was doing a certain activity. I didn't do it for that reason, but I learned it's apparently a good way to meet like minded people in a foreign country.

The way I set it up is, "if you coming you coming, but if not then oh well I'm still going." Basically, I'm setting it up for a second person but if that person flops I and my trip will still be a dope solo trip. One good example is booking your OWN accommodation in case of flopping.

Me I'm a big dude, and I have street smarts being raised in certain neighborhoods here in NY. I also been in some HOODS overseas(not by myself but with a local but STILL most of the times these locals were FEMALES), if I feel a certain area or people are acting funny I quickly leave. For context I been to Haiti(my father's country) though I was with a personal driver. Some other dangerous countries I been to were South Africa and Brasil. South Africa I especially try and use street smarts. But all in all don't look like or act like a "lick" as us Black Americans say and you will be good. Andc yea traveling solo forces me to be more adventurous, and when I travel alone I make A LOT of friends/connects. In South Africa(where I travel to alone) I have a lot of friends. And yea whenever people walk up to me(as long as they are not tryna scam me) it is because they are curious about a Black person with an American accent which is usually RARE overseas. And so I may convo. They be like "oh you're from America right?"

What's your height? I agree height is good to have to deter people w/ bad intentions, especially in countries where the locals are shorter. You're also likely to get more attention from women who are into that. I'm 1.83m. Not tall for where I live (average height here is 1.85, I believe), and I also don't consider myself tall. But several times I was surprised to learn that some people respond well to my height in some other countries where the average height is shorter.

My uncle told me he visited well known neighbourhoods from rap music when he was in New York, but I had to laugh when he said he did it from a car. He's not a scary type, but he was with his wife, so I didn't get on his case over it. I told him he should have just connected with a well respected local and he would have been good.

Months ago I watched this and I'm planning to do the same thing (girl is easy on the eyes, too).

Venezuelan Girl Takes Me Into Her Hood, Petare 🇻🇪 - YouTube
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cOScCHtNWYM

My people tell me don't do it, but how bad can it really be? If you're not white like that guy from the video, you're going to blend in. You just have to make sure you're traveling with someone who is respected in their neighborhood, like I said.

People are people. People skills still apply in the most dangerous neighborhoods. I'd be more worried about rival neighbourhoods when seen entering or leaving or associating with a dangerous neighborhood, than just being in a dangerous neighbourhood.

I've never traveled overseas without my family around, TBH. I wish I could, but such trips would be prohibitively expensive for me if I had to cover all the expenses myself.

As someone who spent twelve years of my childhood in Singapore and Hong Kong, I do miss the tropics. Lately our family trips have focused on the US's cool mountainous regions (e.g. Yosemite, the Pacific Northwest, the Rockies, and Appalachia), and I must say I've grown bored of that kind of scenery. We have been to South Africa once, and I would love to check out other countries on the continent as well. A Jamaican mutual on Twitter once recommended his native country to me, and I certainly wouldn't mind visiting the Caribbean either.

I'm 6 foot and so think the same height as you, but I'm also muscular. But yea most countries I go to the locals are shorter than me. Not saying that's ENOUGH but they gonna true a big man first compared to a woman.

I know this Youtuber and I find him and others like him to be corny tbh. The whole making your travels JUST about traveling to the poorest of poor parts of a country and observing the locals like you are on a safari especially when it comes to non-White countries rubs me the wrong way. Not saying this is YOU but people like that Kurt dude. He also went to my fathers country of Haiti, and that country already has a bad enough image. Meanwhile I did not stay in the places he stayed when I went. Now I did visit the hoods in countries like I mentioned to you before but thats not the sole purpose of my travels. And it was mainly cultural. That Kurt dude and others like him seem to do it out of boredom.
Again NOT saying this is YOU and that you visiting the hood in certain countries will make you a bad purpose(again I have and I can post pictures). However, some of these White Youtubers have a weird poverty fetish...

Just go with a trusted local. When I went into the favela in Rio I went with a cool Black Brasilian tour guide.

You live in Cali. I'd start off with visiting Mexico(obviously the safe part). I don't know how much the tickets are to the Caribbean from California but from NY they are quite cheap. Jamaica is a good option, just stay on the resorts as a newbie.

Yea Brasil is like that.

He mentioned Brooklyn, but he spoke about neighborhoods in general. Either he meant multiple neighborhoods just in Brooklyn, or the boroughs that rap listeners here would consider more relevant to Hip Hop history (Queens and Bronx) compared to the remaining two.

I know exactly what you mean. I only watched that one video from him. I remember him making some subtle patronizing comments to the girl that turned me off, so I never bothered looking deeper into his channel. But yeah, I've seen it with other YT travelers that were really disrespectful. Example:

Cuba SUCKS, I'm Leaving. (why it's the worst country i've ever visited) 🇨🇺 - YouTube
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RLonBRRBDmU

^That guy was treated well by locals. In the video he even admits he had a good time, all things considered. If anything, he needs to blame western countries for the sanctions on Cuba. Then Colby Covington returned to the safety of his home and showed his colors with this clickbait title disrespecting Cubans.

Because of these and other generation z antics, I can't really watch or follow a lot of these people. Some people can watch 2 or 3 hour podcast and travel vids regularly. A channel has to be really good for me to keep coming back and watch it.

I found this Dutch woman's channel on accident, months ago. Might watch more of her vids. Will be undertaking a similar motorcycle trip through (parts of) Africa in the future.

I do plant to visit Ethiopia soon, because of the historical sites. The pandemic and some private affairs got in my way, thus I couldn't go earlier on.

Honestly, no. I did learn how to tell my address to the taxi driver in Cantonese while in Hong Kong, but you can get away with speaking just English in both places since they were both formerly British colonies.

I've never really been good with other languages anyway. I took Spanish in high school, and I just struggled with it, especially the spoken stuff (like a lot of other autistic people, I have auditory processing problems).

He could mean either Flatbush(not dangerous), East Flatbush, Bedstuy(which isn't really dangerous like it use to be), East New York(he has no reason of being there), Brownsville(has no reason of being there), Canarsie, etc. But either way Brooklyn has many safe and affluent neighborhoods.

And thats what I can't stand these clowns are treated super well by the locals, including the locals making sure they are well taking care of but then they make this lowkey disparaging titles and even thumbnails. And ironically I'm trying to go to Cuba in April. Yea the country has limitations for us Americans(thanks to the useless embargo that crazed Republicans won't let go), but overall Cuba is a good tourist destination for many people, and based on what many people told me is VERY safe. Also he like many of these bored White dudes(yea I went there), INTENTIONALLY go to the poorest of poor parts. Dude seems to be in the poorest of poor parts in Cuba. And worst these types pat their selves on the back by "gOinG oUtsIdE tHe tOuRiSt zOneS" like many in the comments are saying yet this is every country OUTSIDE the West...

Good question. Egypt will be down the line. Trust I definitely want to visit and was close to visiting last year but held off. But Egypt is definitely on the list. I already have trusted tour guides waiting for me. And I know many people who have been. And I know Egyptians personally who have invited. I wanna do Cairo, Luxor and Aswan. But with Egypt... I want to be in and out. Outside of the Ancient history and see the Black Nubians I don't care for anything else. I haven't found yet any tour packages that has less than 8 days but we'll see. But I could probably do Egypt 2025.

Ethiopia is def good for historical stuff. It sucks you can't see Lalibela or Gondor due to the stupid ethnic wars in Tigrey and Amhara regions against the govt. But in Addis I recommend seeing King Menelik's palace which I did. Halie's church which I also did(even has his tomb) and also Addis has a lot of good museums which crazy historical contents.

Just be warned that the language barrier is extreme and Addis has NO street addresses which is weird. I would try and get a personal driver(if you airbnb maybe a host can hook you up with one). In Addis I would stay in Bole. Nice area.

With Addis be prepared for the begging. The WORST I experienced of any country, and yet I heard Egypt is just as bad...

But if you want a good historical/cultural trip than Ethiopia is perfect. Addis has been safe from the wars and is well protected. Addis also has a lot of good traditional restaurants. But if you are SERIOUS(as in tickets book), I know a friend on ground who can MAYBE walk you through. He's Ethiopian American and owns a nightclub.

Cairo, Luxor and Aswan are great choices. And in actuality, many people in Cairo, Luxor look like those from Aswan.

How we would consider them by Western standards, many look like light skinned yellow and caramel complexioned Blacks. Or rather, that is what they are.

I probably have to put this on hold, till it gets better. Or “mixed” as some would consider.

Okay, thanks for explaining this.

Came back from Tanzania. Some roughness in the beginning but had an amazing time. 11 days in Dar es Salaam and 4 in Zanzibar. When I return for a third time thinking more of Arusha and less time in Dar.

Johannesburg and Cape Town. When I return for a 4th time thinking about squeezing in either Pretoria or Durban.

Good post. All in all I really wanna see the Black Egyptians. But as for Ethiopia you'll be safe in Addis and Addis does have a good amount of historical stuff.

Years ago 50 said in an interview that his J. Queens neighboorhood had more home owners and higher income than you might think. Going by stereotypes you can get the wrong impression about income in different US neighborhoods. Reminds me of a time on ABF when big mouth guy was talking about Aframs being poor. Then I looked up income statistics on different immigrant groups in the US and his ethnic group was among the poorest in the US.

It shows you how people can get cosigns and get their mockery off (he was one of those guys who needed his daily dose of forum 'thank you' button validation) with no one realizing he's the last one to talk. Ppl like him get away w/ things bc stereotypes make it easy for statistics on his country to go unnoticed.

And yes. I do my mockery also every now and then, but if you're going to do it, you have to keep it real, which also means, calling out bs everywhere, not just in one country, place, etc. For instance, I do not have the best opinion of western intellectuals on matters of religion or cosmology or censorship in science and education, but I do acknowledge their contributions to technology (e.g. medicine) and running society (e.g. living standards, life expectancy, social mobility). I know I'm going to be in for some reality checks when I visit places in Africa in regards to things I have taken for granted. That's just a part of keeping it real with yourself.

Yes. I've heard about Cuba being safe, especially for regional standards. For one, they don't have the massive guns and drugs and cartel problems of nearby Latin American countries. I like that, because Cubans, without exaggerating it, still seem to have traces of 'innocence' that many countries used to have but don't have anymore. For instance, in the old days in some places you could leave your house and leave your door open and no one would go into your house. I've heard stories of Japan and some other countries being like that. I don't know if Cuba has that specifically, but from what I've heard it does seem they still have some of that mentality, which I think is mostly lost in today's world. This is also why they say, if you still want to get a feel for throwback architecture, vehicles, daily life, etc. you should go visit Cuba now, before it opens up. As much as I want every day Cubans to benefit from joining the world economy, it's obvious that this is going to go at the expense of what I've just mentioned.

Do you remember that person's name? Or what ethnic group he was? But yes Black Americans are among the poorest group compared to immigrants, however this is why context is important(and not making excuses) especially when it comes to percentages and raw numbers. Because Black Americans have a population of 40,000,000 plus, a population larger than Canada or Australia. And so of course we are going to have more poor people than many small immigrant groups. And hence why us and Hispanics are almost neck and neck with income. And yes Queens has many Black homeowners but let's move past Queens and look at the Maryland/DMV area which has many strong Black Middle Class areas like the growing Charles County.

Again not denying the issues us Black Americans face but many critics of us ignore the nuances and contexts. And like you said, only go off of stereotypes.

Yea the average poor Cuban has more advantages than the average poor in other Latin American countries. Cuba does have its issues and I have spoken to Cubans(Black ones mind you) on the ground who talked about issues but as a person who has been to other Latin countries, Cuba seems like it has more structure and order like you pointed out and not reckless fuckery. And in fact Cuba is NOT far not far behind Dominican Rep in terms of GDP per capita. But yea, I guess I will see for myself once I get there late next month. And agree overall.

It was that guy who tried to claim Kerma, but who has no claim. I tried to post the immigrant data, so you could get the hint by scrolling all the way to the bottom and see the countries at the bottom and connect the dots (since I don't want to call countries out). But his ethnic group is no longer listed on the immigrant income wiki page.

Didn't know about those areas, but good developments. I heard Atlanta also has some standout black neighbourhoods, also. Will check the vid later.

What would you say those are, and how can they exploit them to better themselves? In terms of their advantages, I like the fact they have free education and I like what they have done in terms of medical charity around the world (I believe they were active in Haiti during the earthquake, also). Although I haven't heard anything about this in some time. Probably they had to scale back on this because of the worsening economy and lack of access to medical supplies.
