BACKGROUND:

About eight miles northeast of Persepolis, on the opposite side of the Pulvar River, rises a cliff-face in a place called Naqsh-e Rostam. Four tombs are carved out of the cliff-face, the first and oldest is the tomb of Darius I, which is identified by inscriptions. The other three tombs have no inscriptions to identify them, but are believed to be the tombs of Achaemenian kings Xerxes I, Artaxerxes I, and Darius II.

The facade of Darius' tomb is divided into three registers: the bottom register is blank, the middle is sculptured to imitate the front of a palace, and the top shows the monarch at worship on the top of a piece of furniture that is supported by representatives of the nations in his realm.

This top register is adorned with a framed relief panel showing a dais supported by thirty representatives of the nations of the empire. These representatives are identified by cuneiform captions. They are arranged in two tiers of fourteen people with raised arms between the legs, and two people on the outside supporting the feet of the dais.

 -

The inscriptions on the upper and central registers of his tomb (DNa and DNb) are well-known, but there are several smaller texts on the same monument: two trilingual honorific inscriptions for the courtiers Gobryas and Aspathines, and inscriptions naming the figures supporting Darius' throne (DNe).

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It is with the name list, and examination of the relief panel, that researchers must infer the identity of the people on Apadana's stairways: by comparing hats, facial features, clothing etc. Needless to say, the damage done to this cliff-face by two thousand years of weathering, makes inferred identification a very precarious proposition. Additionally, there are thirty peoples represented on the cliff-face, but only twenty-three on the stairway. There is no way to know that the correct twenty-three were extracted.

Upon quick examination, it becomes apparent that Darius' list and the identifications provided by the Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago, (the sites original researchers), do not exactly match - surprise, surprise, the Albinos lie.

 -

At greatest interest to me are these people:

 -

The Albinos lyingly call them Kushites, Ethiopians, and even Abyssinian's.

There are two problems with that lie:
1) Ethiopia was never a part of the Persian Empire.
2) The antelope they have is an ASIAN NOT AN AFRICAN antelope.

 -
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Albinos never allow pictures of the actual inscription to be shown. But this MAY be a real transcription.

 -

Re; the NOI thread: if this is not a real transcription or if you can't translate it: how about taking a few NOI troops down to the U.C. and getting original pictures of the inscriptions. Tell them Crackers we want our history back.

In 525 BC, Persia, under Cambyses defeated Egyptian pharaoh Psammetic II at the battle of Pelusiumruler and ruled Egypt. This took part during the reign of the Kushite King Amani-natake-lebte (538-519 BC)1. Various historical records mention military frictions between Kush and Persia.2
Herodotus, the Greek historian and geographer, reprted that Cambyses wanted to conquer Kush so he sent to the king of Kush "spies" as messengers bearing gifts. The king of Kush, as Herodotus explains, is aware of the fact that the Persian messengers are in fact spies. However the king of Nubia made a ridicule of Cambyses gifts. He farther insulted him by sending him a bow back with the messengers telling him "when the Persians draw their bows (of equal size as mine) as easily as I do this, then he"-(Cambyses)-"should march against the long lived Ethiopians,"(Herodotus iii. 21).3According to Herodotus, Kush did not pay tribute to Persia but instead they constantly sent the Persian King precious gifts including gold, ebony and elephant tusks. We also know from Herodotus as well as from other Greek reporters that part of the Persian army of King Xerxes (486-465 BC) was composed of Kushite archers (Herodotus vii.69-70).

Mike the man is carrying an elephant tusk and looks similar to a King of Meroe

If not "nubian" who do you think he might be?
An Indian?

An Indian carrying gold, Persepolis

notice, a whole slew of ethnicities portrayed at persepolis but many have the same facil features in the art, thin noses, very small lips, etc.
It seems to be stylized, like variations of all one type, deosn't seem that accurate that everybody would look so similar

You're right these figures should not be looking alike.

Lioness has noted something we have taken for granted in relation to the figures from the Persian stairway. That is that all the figures appear to have the same noses and lips.

This started me asking the question,”Has the farsi who now rule Persia changed the figures to make them resemble themselves?”

 -

The contemporary picture of the Indian from the Persian stairway appears to be altered.

Below is an earlier picture of the Indians

 -

Below we compare the photos. If you look carefuly you can see that they are not alike.

 -

The older picture shows that the original Indian depicted on the stairway had larger lips & nose, and a fuller face. The smile on the new photo looks like a smirk, instead of a dignified smile on the original photo.

It is clear that this artifact has been altered to make the Indians appear more “European” or “Syrian” looking.

Clyde don't be ridiculous, they look no different. You were on the right track but then you jumped to conspiracy theory. You have a washed out poor quality photo and despite that fact it happens to look exactly the same in features as the first photo. The features are just as little in both photos.

 -

the only difference is that the second photo is taken where the camera angle is slightly at an angle to the wall. However this doesn't even make the features look at all different. You are simply iprojecting what you want to belive into blurry or washed out bad quality photos or reproductions of photos in a book.

Of course not. The figures at Perspolis are all done by the same artist or by an artist directing a team of artists.
The artist of person who commisioned the art probably resembled these figures. Many artists do a stylistic thing where multiple figures look like clones or as here minor variations of one type.

Clyde - It is a great error to refer to those people as Farsi (Arabic pronunciation of Parsi - the Parsa tribe). The modern people in Iran have nothing to do with the ancient Persians.

They descend from Turks and Mongols who invaded and slaughtered the Persians, Medes, and Elamites.

But to the point: unlike earlier Black civilizations, the Persians and Medes derived from nomadic horse people. They had no artistic skills, thus they depicted all people with the same faces, differentiating peoples by hair type and clothing.

These faces are probably how they looked themselves.

The had plenty of artistic skills.
 -

In their art they simply were not concerned with realism to the extent of pointing out greater physical differences between ethnic groups.
(I also notice they appear short in stature)

Art doesn't always have to be a realistic simulation.
You have fallen to in love with European paintings
There is some great Sub Saharan African art and Picasso ripped off a few things

But since the REAL Clyde winters actually did work briefly with Dr Ivan Van Sertima in the 1970's you have stolen his name for your own agenda! is that legal?

Mike I understand your analysis.
Blacks Mulattoes and Whites all have the same features
In some cases it overlaps to where you can't tell who's who.
But that's not a problem because the hair reseolves the issue.

Curly haired people are black.

White people have straight hair.

And we can observe in modern life what happens when the two mix.

When we look at Mulattoes in our everyday modern lives we notice that part of their hair is straight and part of their hair is curly.

So these sculptures correspond to out modern observations. The hair of Mulatto people, as expected, splits into two types of hair on the same person.
