I was struck by the similarity of this feature of the Temple of Tarxien on Malta to the entrance to 'New Grange', actually the oldest megalithic structure in Ireland. Both have a slab carved with spirals arranged in front of the sacred portal. Both are of a similar age to the Egyptian pyramids.

Other Maltese temples reminded me of Stonehenge. There seems to be quite a lot of evidence for a common culture extending down the Atlantic from Ireland and Britain, via western France and Iberia to Morocco. Henges and barrows and standing stones are essential features of their architecture. If Malta was linked to this Atlantic culture then that establishes these people at the heart of the Mediterranean, too.

Also found on Malta have been several statues and figurines of a fat goddess with heavy thighs.

Similar examples of prehistoric 'Venus figurines' have been found at many prehistoric sites, including at Catal Huyuk in Turkey, and in many other places, (mostly in Europe, some so old they are made of mammoth ivory). Prehistoric female figurines have also turned up on Orkney.
