I also saw some of the swimming, gymnastics, and volleyball too (since I'm up late)
but I only saw the immediate replays of the swimming and track.
Michael Phelps looks built to swim, and I didn't pay too much attention to gymnastics before but was impressed by Yang Wei
and surprised at how young the girls looked.
Back flipping on a narrow board? Flipping through the air using your arms and two bars? That's some shyt right there!

Yeh that Phelps guys looks impressive. I still think China might come out on top in this Olympics as I don't see the US getting too much in track. Seems like China's sports is imitating their economic take over from the US in manufacturing.

Jamiaca ain't won JACK since the Jamaican bobsled team. And that was when?
One good day, out of ten-thousand bad ones, and we all of a sudden folks are bouncing off the walls.
And I didn't see that Bolt guy, but he NEEDS to be tested for HGH right NOW! He's been doping more than a herd of horses. The Kenyans win the Boston Marathon, the Americans win the Olymipics, now for the first time in human history a Jamaican wins? Doesn't that sound just a little suspicious to anyone? It sure does to me.
Jesus, imagine if they could swim!

A puerto Rican said it a bit differently. "Them Jamaicans are fast .. before, they didn't have the training/trainers but now that they got em they smoke everybody else!"
It's been a phenomenal olympics performance, but the new high-tech apparel probably came in handy. (Guess Phelp's goggles didn't help as much as he would have liked tho)
This doesn't take anything from the atheletes tho

Must have smoked too much ganja celebrating Bolt's win! And why is anyone trying to make the Jamaicans into track stars? We all know they can't succeed without cheating. Have we learned nothing from Milli Vanilli?
So some Puerto Rican says they're fast. So what? Are we listening to the Ricans now? Tell them come back when they win at something.
The Jamiacan's are barely one-hit wonders. And not even classy ones. Snoop Dogg and Three-Six Mafia carry themselves with more grace. One guy (who is indisputably hyped up on some sort of steroids!) and one lone female win a race and all of a sudden it's "dump on the US track stars" time? Guess that's what happens when you haven't won a damn thing since...forever!
The black American track star has been the Iron Giant of athletics going on 80 years now. Yes, the last four years haven't been the usual stellar fare, and all these peons who didn't even deserve to be competing think they will now dance on the giants beard, but the US track runner is STILL the standard by which ALL others measures themselves. Not just the standard by which they are measured by others, but the standard by which they measure themsevles. They know who the true kings are. They know the black US runner will still be here while they will be gone. Let's look at recent history. Hopefully this will help some folks get their feet back on the ground. Remember when that white boy --Jeremy what's-his-name?-- with the shades won the gold four years ago. EVERY white commentator was going nuts over him. Where is that Jeremy bozo today? He didn't even make the IOC tryouts.
Or that Chinese guy who won the 100 meter hurdles in 2004. He set a record that year. And all these Chinamen were orgasming over it. The "Yellow Bullet" they called him. Well, it's four years later and that punk didn't even race. Had a hamstring "injury." Yeah, right! Why not say he had a tummyache too! On the other hand the Americans from four years ago were back, all of them returned, like a class reunion; Olympics after Olympics. Every four years. This is why track is thought of an "American" sport. Staying power. The US track stars hold the patent. As for those "other" countries? Well, seems one-and-done is about the best they can do. Bolt will be no different. He's only 21, but makr my words, four years from now he'll have some excuse for why he can't compete. Or he'll be caught doping.
It's nice the Jamaicans have had their moment in the sun. But it won't last. It never does for anyone but the black US runners. Don't believe me? Ask The "Yellow Bullet" or Jeremy "I wear my sunglasses at night" how that "staying on top" thing worked out for them.
The US athletes are like the General Motors of athletics. Some may be flashier (France) others sneakier (China) and some downright annoying (Jamaica) but the US runners always get the job done. Bolt is no Carl Lewis or Jesse Owens. Don't insult true greatness by highlighing some no-talent, HGH-injecting cheater. You know he's a fake and so does everyone else. But hey, he allows you to feel good for all of five minutes, so it's all good, right?
Before you call my remarks sour grapes, remember this: it would be one thing if this guy won by a few hundreths of a second, but to have done what he did, with a physique as poor as his, SCREAMS steroids. If this were Michael Johnson you'd be saying that...and you would have a case. A step forward is plausible, but a quantum leap is not...not without help. Mark my words: a year or two from now --if not sooner!-- we'll be hearing about how this guy gets busted for doping. And then what? Will you say "Well, he probably wasn't doping in Beijing?"

Sportbilly, I guess you never heard of Arthur Wint, Herb Mckinley, George Rhoden, Donald Quarrie, Merlene Ottey, Leslie Laing, Veronica Campbell-Brown, Deon Hemmings, Aleen Bailey
America's best hope in the 400m, Sanya Richards, is a Jamaican. She has probably won the gold by now.
Moreover, Donovan Bailey who won Olympic gold for Canada is a Jamaican.

The Olympic Games began in 1900 based on the athletic events held by the Ancient Greeks but promoted as a form of Pan European athletic competition.
The nations of Europe immediately used the results of the OG as evidence of national and racial vigour. Recall the Nazis and their use of the 1936 games as proof of Ayran racial vigour--from which terms such as "Teutonic Gods", "blond superman", etc. developed. The story about Jesse Owens and Hitler--apocryphal or not--put a dent in that racial paradigm.
The competition between the Communist world and the Capitalist world also saw the OG being used as evidence of the superiority of one system over the other. Hence the USSR-America competition for "most medals" over the years.
Today China is using the OG to show up the world status of China as a dominant nation. It leads in the number of gold medals won, and that took lots of preparation and planning with resources put into preparing their athletes for the less popular sports where there would be less competition. The Chinese--according to their media--also placed great importance on the hope that their champion hurdler Liu Xiang would win the gold medal--to prove that the Chinese can compete at all levels and win.
Apparently Western nations take the OG seriously because they have no hesitation in handing out citizenship to non-European athletes(Africans especially) if they think they can bring in national prestige. Example: Portugal's top sprinter and European champion is of Nigerian background. Britain also benefits from the "muscle drain" from the Caribbean and Africa. And even Australia has some black players on its Olympic basketball team.
What is also obvious is that economic underdevelopment, poor planning and class divisions play an important role in the way in which the non-Western nations perform in the games.
Africans[in the broad sense to include those of the Americas] hardly participate in any sport outside track and the jumps[high and triple]--boxing excepted. With the exception of Cuba it is rare to see Africans participate in the relatively low budget field sports such as javelin, pole vault, hammer, discus, shot put, etc.
And when it comes to gymnastics, water sports, handball, canoeing, fencing, horsemanship, shooting, table tennis, badmington, etc. the African participation is very negligible or absent.
Which brings up the issue of the point and purpose of the OG. It seems that the way how things are set up only the U.S., China, Russia and Germany could ever hope to win.
The U.S. medal counters always count according to number of medals won; others count according to gold medals won--on the principle that a gold medal is worth more than a silver or bronze.
But there are some facts that need explaining: Brazil with an ethnic population mix similar to that of the U.S. and with a large population of 190 million people hardly performs up to the level that could be anticipated whether in track, field or otherwise. But Cuba consistently overperforms in all areas. India, Pakistan and Bangladesh with a 1.2 billion population are nowhere to be seen--with one of its commentators explaining this anomaly with the claim that most Indian children are malnourished.
Of course, the Western nations and China will look at the medal count to determine who is best in terms of national vigour and athletic prowess.
I suggest that there should be 2 tabels for the medals count. One table would note the winners in terms of 3 points for gold, 2 for silver and 1 for bronze. The other table would rank nations in terms of their normed populations. Thus a nation of 10 million that wins 2 gold would be ranked higher than a nation with 50 million people and 3 gold.
I would also replace national anthems with an Olympic theme tune.

It is obvious that there may be some set of physiological reasons that explain why West Africans tend to run much more quickly[with quicker reaction times than others] over short distances--100 metres to 400 metres-- than Europeans and Asians. Those who dominate tend to come from the Caribbean and the U.S.--while West Africans in West Africa and Brazil take third tier. The reasons may be training conditions.
East Africans--and less so Moroccans and Algerians, but not Egyptians--also dominate the longer distances[from 800 metres to marathon] and there could be physiological/genetic reasons for such. Of course, there are exceptions to the rule, but the rule tends to hold in general. All this points to the diversity of the African genotype and phenotype.
The success of the track athletes from the small island(2 million) of Jamaica is to be explained by a rigorous training programme and the fact that the population of that island in the main amount to no more than West African transplants--all victims of the contingencies of the Atlantic trade.

Yep, I saw the Cuba vs. US volleyball game on the other night. Other than that, don't think I've seen black volleyballers (don't watch much).
I still think there's much to be revealed in many sports though (like in track for example Bolt's easy record makes this clear).

I agree, Alive. I've always said if black athletes had the training and experience as their white counterparts in other sports such as swimming, blacks would do quite well.
