Schoolgirl hatches ducklings from local supermarket eggs
Animal loving schoolgirl Jessica Samson has hatched two ducklings from eggs bought at her local supermarket.
Jessica, aged ten, persuaded her parents to put the eggs in an incubator rather than eat them when they came back from their weekly shop.
Ten-year-old Jessica Sansom with her two-day-old ducklings Splash and Splosh that hatched after her family decided to incubate some duck eggs they'd bought from a Waitrose supermarket
Now two of the six eggs have hatched as tiny ducklings four weeks after they were bought and Jessica has named them Splash and Splosh.
Parents Elizabeth and Jeremy agreed to the experiment because the whole family were intrigued by the name on the packet which read Gladys May's Braddock Whites.
The family already keep geese, ducks and geese at their home at Watermouth, near Ilfracombe, and had room in their incubator for the eggs.
They knew that Braddock Whites are a rare breed of duck and hoped at least one of the eggs may have been fertilized.
Jessica said she was amazed when the egg finally hatched and was followed by a second duckling just hours later.
She said: "I have named them Splash and Splosh. They are the cutest ducks ever."
Mum Elizabeth said: "We were curious about the eggs and about this breed of duck so we tried to see if we could hatch them out.
"Any egg laid by a chicken or duck that is kept with a male bird will have the ability to develop if it is kept in the right temperature and humidity.
"The reason more eggs do not hatch like these is because they are not kept in the right conditions."

Yeah, big woop, there was a drake in the house. I think its far more natural to keep birds with the males of their species. I always keep a few roosters with the hens and they seem to get along well. Nice ducks!
